The Rutland Arms, the first of the city centre pubs to feature in this list, is a haven for hipsters found right in the heart of the arty part of Sheffield. The traditional early 20th-century Sheffield pub found on the corner of Furnival Street and Brown Street is easily spotted thanks to its bright yellow front. It’s anything but traditional inside, with a uniquely crafted interior that definitely represents the eccentricities of the area. Fagan’s is more than just a pub; it’s a Sheffield institution. For 37 years, Tom and Barbara were the beloved custodians of this city centre gem, until a group of nine locals – including Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders – stepped in to save it from being snapped up by a chain. Calling themselves The Fellowship of Fagan’s, the group has kept the pub in community hands, preserving its unique charm for the people of Sheffield. Now, you can expect live music five nights a week, a regular quiz, and a brilliant line-up of ales (yes, including Guinness) – all alongside hearty pies. What more could you ask for? 69 Broad Ln, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 4BS

Tucked just off the Shalesmoor tram stop, The Wellington is a true Sheffield gem and the official tap for Neepsend Brew Co, one of the city’s most respected independent breweries. Operated by the Sheaf Inns group, this heritage pub dates back to 1839 and retains much of its traditional character, from its cosy wood-panelled rooms to the sympathetic 1940s refit that still shapes its atmosphere today. Inside, you’ll find a rotating selection of real ales – always showcasing fresh brews from Neepsend alongside guest lines – plus a fine choice of spirits. It’s dog-friendly, boasts a welcoming beer garden, and offers a refreshingly unpretentious experience where the focus is firmly on good beer and good company. 1 Henry St, Sheffield S3 7EQ

Located in the heart of Kelham Island, The Fat Cat opened its doors in 1981, though the building itself dates back to 1850. Originally named The Alma, it was owned for many years by a large brewery before being purchased independently and renamed. Like many pubs in Sheffield, it has a strong emphasis on community, celebrating the true values of conversation while showcasing excellent local ales. It has a stunning wrap-around wooden bar with an ornate clock that sits. In 1990, Kelham Island Brewery was built in the pub’s beer garden and brewed its first batch of beer that September. 23 Alma St, Sheffield S3 8SA

As with all Samuel Smith brewery pubs, The Brown Bear is full of character and is also one of the oldest pubs in Sheffield city centre. Dating back to the late 18th century, the pub is a Grade II listed building, which possibly got its name from a bear-baiting pit located in the Botanical Gardens. Sam Smith pubs are known for their strict rules, such as no phones and no swearing, but reward you with cheap, decent booze all from its own brewery, and its pubs tend to be stunning venues. 109 Norfolk St, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 2JE
