A Sheffield criminal has been made to pay back more than £69,000 after the police investigated how he profited from his offences.

Almuez Hamid, 26, of Lowedges Crescent, Sheffield, was jailed in November 2024 for three years and six months, for drug offences and for possession of criminal property. Warrants and vehicle stops throughout 2021 and 2022 saw cash and drugs paraphernalia being seized from Hamid before he was jailed.

Now, South Yorkshire Police have ordered him to pay money back into the system following an investigation by their Economic Crime Unit’s Asset Recovery Team. They studied how Hamid had benefited from his crimes, before looking at ways to make him pay it back. The investigation included looking into the amount of money Hamid has in the bank, as well as his assets like property or vehicles.

It was found Hamid had benefited by £111,110. In August, the police made a confiscation order against Hamid, ordering him to pay back £69,656, the amount the courts found he had available. Hamid now has three months to pay the full amount.

Laura Hough, head of Asset Recovery, said: “Money gathered from confiscation orders is paid back into the justice system. It helps positively impact communities previously blighted by criminals. Information submitted by you, our local communities, is essential in securing confiscation orders. Intelligence from the public allows us to construct a better a understanding of how much convicted criminals have benefitted from their life of criminality.

“Have you noticed someone who has suddenly started wearing designer clothing or have bought a second car despite not appearing to have a job? They may be gaining this money illegally. If you see something that is not quite right, I urge you to report it to us, or through Crimestoppers if you don’t want to talk to us directly and want to remain anonymous.”
