A fashion expert has studied the choices of Queen Camilla, Kate Middleton and Melania Trump during the state banquet – and she claims one of them “didn’t hit the mark”.

Donald and Melania Trump have been in the UK this week for an unprecedented second state visit. The wardrobe choices of the prominent women during the occasion were a topic of keen discussion.

Fashion editor Lauren Bulla revealed that she was particularly taken aback by Melania’s choice of outfit, picking out the First Lady’s choice of attire when she was seen walking through Windsor Castle.

She said: “The fully off the shoulder style feels quite uncharacteristic of her normal standard. I wonder if she had a different stylist for this occasion. The vibrant pink, almost Barbie pink belt and the slit doesn’t really feel appropriate for the occasion. It reads a bit out of place.”

The expert reckons Melania’s clothing choices might represent a change of style, adding that the 55-year-old might have “missed the mark”.

Lauren added: “It doesn’t seem to fit the energy of the event itself, considering how serious it is. I’m surprised that Melania isn’t wearing any jewellery but the belt speaks for itself. It feels very 2000s. It doesn’t really go with her standard wardrobe, it’s as if she’s trying to hit a younger audience. I don’t think it really hit the mark.”

The fashion editor believes that the royals are as “traditional” as ever when it comes to how they dress for important occasions.

Unpicking some of Queen Camilla’s choices, she felt that jewellery played a crucial role in her outfit, saying: “She’s wearing a statement necklace that nicely contrasts the almost matte feel of the dress itself – colour wise it’s vibrant but due to the shape and tailoring, it reads as a bit more subdued and neutral – jewellery does a nice job of playing it up a little bit.”

However, it was Kate’s choice of attire that Lauren felt stole the show as she said her outfit even offers a hint of “flirtiness”.

She added “It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s traditional, but with a modern take on a conservative hemline which is really nice. It’s long sleeved and high neck, but the lace gives a flirtiness because it’s sheer from wrist to neck.

“The silhouette is stunning, the way it billows out at the bottom and comes in at the waist. It’s very polished but not stuffy. It’s a standard look for her, but it’s a beautiful dress. It suits the occasion.”
