Two thirds of all services are expected to be off the road

Transport bosses have said up to two thirds of Greater Manchester’s public bus network will be off the roads on Friday as the first in a series of planned strikes by drivers is due to start.

School buses, too, are due to be hit by the industrial action, although buses will continue to run in Wigan and Bolton.

The action is set to cause widespread disruption for commuters, with towns and areas without easy access to railway stations and Metrolink trams expected to be hardest hit.

More than 2,000 members of the union Unite who work under the Bee Network umbrella are set to walk out in a co-ordinated strike over pay.

It is the first wave of industrial action to hit the Bee Network since buses were brought under public control by the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

Staff at three Bee Network bus operators – First, Metroline and Stagecoach – are due to walk out from Friday until Monday.

But further strikes have also been announced – from September 30 to October 2.

This weekend’s planned strikes also fall as a number of major events are held in Manchester, with Manchester United hosting Chelsea on Saturday and a number of big concert gigs.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has also provided a full list of the services that will be affected.
