Marvin Ducksch is ‘in a good position’ physically now after joining Birmingham City with an injury.

The two-time Germany international arrived six weeks ago from Werder Bremen having missed pre-season with a calf issue and has been used sparingly by Davies in recent games.

Ducksch played 45 minutes in the Carabao Cup defeat to Port Vale before coming off the bench in league defeats to Leicester and Stoke.

Davies hasn’t nailed down an attacking combination yet and Ducksch is nearing a stage where he could come into contention for a starting place.

“From a fitness perspective, he’s in a good position now,” Davies said on the eve of Blues’ home match against Swansea. “He’s shown glimpses of what he can do in the games that he’s played.

“He’s different because he’s a bigger presence, he links the game, he’s quite intelligent, and he’s got a goal in his locker as well. Hopefully we can start to utilise him more.”

Davies has had to be patient with Ducksch over the past few weeks. Given the striker’s impressive statistics in the Bundesliga – 55 goal contributions over the last three seasons – Davies must have been tempted to throw him in.

The Blues boss added: “Marvin basically came injured and the main thing was we had to get that injury – a calf – right, then build his pre-season.

“In some senses he’s coming to the end of his pre-season. Others would do a six-week training block then they would have their first game of the season, whereas Marvin has probably only been training for four to five weeks.

“That’s why I’m trying to get him up to speed, trying to get him fit, so that he can make an impact. He has developed his minutes, so he is getting there.

“He’s a player that I really have high hopes for and that can make a good impact for us.”
