Steak restaurant chain Flat Iron has confirmed that it is opening a Bristol restaurant in December. Located in the heart of Bristol’s Old City in Clare Street, the new venue will mark the brand’s arrival to the South West.

It appears that the restaurant will sit in the former home of Four Wise Monkeys, the Asian ‘super diner’ run by the Hyde and Co Group, which also runs The Raven in the same building. Four Wise Monkeys, one of several venues from the Bristol-based company, moved out of the building in April, BristolLive reported, as it couldn’t meet the demands of the landlord.

The menu at the new Flat Iron restaurant will include the signature ‘flat iron’ steak, a cut taken from the feather blade and renowned for its ‘flavour, tenderness and juiciness when seam butchered with skill and care’. Diners are also promised blackboard specials, including a Wagyu steak of the day and a chilli cheeseburger made using beef from Flat Iron’s herd in Yorkshire.

Fred Smith, Flat Iron’s head of beef, said: “At Flat Iron, we are passionate about serving top quality, carefully sourced steak at a price that makes it accessible to everyone. Bringing this to Bristol is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and we can’t wait to welcome guests through our doors this December.”

The design of the new Bristol restaurant is described as ‘following Flat Iron’s philosophy of stripping back historic buildings to uncover and celebrate their original character’. At Clare Street, the interiors will be carefully restored and layered with reclaimed materials, oak panelling, vintage furniture and ‘warm, welcoming textures’.

A central oak bar will be installed into the space, which will have room for 104 covers, and cosy lighting and plants are also to be installed.

Flat Iron, which was founded in 2012, now has 15 London restaurants and is due to open a brand new site in Brighton ahead of the Bristol venue, too.

The address of Flat Iron’s new restaurant on Clare Street is also the home of Bristol cocktail bar The Raven, which announced it was taking a break back in July. BristolLive reported at the time that it would be reopening on September 3 as it carried out some ‘exciting building improvements’.

Seven days ago, The Raven shared an update to its Instagram page to say that refurbishments were ‘taking a little longer than expected’ and it would be opening later in the year.

The news of The Raven’s temporary closure came just months after the group announced they would be closing their Asian ‘super diner’ Four Wise Monkeys, which resided in the same building as The Raven, telling BristolLive that they weren’t able to ‘meet the landlords demands for a rent increase of 25 per cent’ and so found a buyer for the building.
