The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind for several regions across Wales on Saturday. The alert coincides with an updated yellow rain alert which also covers most of the country.

The weather agency warned Wales could by hit by “very strong winds” on Saturday afternoon and evening. The warning is in force from 3pm on Saturday until 3am on Sunday. It’s expected the west coast of Wales will be worst affected by the strong winds.

A Met Office forecast reads as follows: “A developing area of low pressure may produce a short spell of very strong winds. Winds will initially strengthen across some western and southwestern areas, before migrating northeastwards, clearing into the North Sea during the early hours of Sunday morning.

“Whilst not everywhere in the warning is expected to experience very strong winds some inland locations may see gusts of 50-60mph whilst gusts of 65-75mph are possible around some coasts.

“The strongest winds are more likely around Bristol Channel and the west Wales coast on Saturday afternoon and early evening then along the North Sea coast of east and northeast England overnight into early Sunday morning.”

The full list of areas affected by the wind warning is: Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan, and Wrexham.

Six flood alerts have also been issued by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) for parts of the Welsh coastline and north Wales on Saturday.

The following areas are affected: Gower peninsula, Western Cleddau, rivers Taf and Cynin, north Gwynedd catchment, Conwy catchment, and Glaslyn and Dwyryd catchment.

NRW warned residents and businesses there is a risk of flooding due to river levels being above normal as a result of increased rainfall.

There is also a risk that properties could become flooded in some areas.

The Met Office alerts for rain and wind warn people to expect some disruption to transport due to the adverse weather.

The wind warning also states there is a risk that some buildings may be damaged for example by tiles falling from roofs.

There is also a “small chance of injuries from flying debris” as well as power cuts.
