No libraries will close in Wirral
No Wirral libraries will close following a major decision by councillors rejecting plans to cut services.
Top councillors in both Labour and the Conservatives promised to never again make cuts to the library service as part of the budget.
Father and son take action over barren land next to Seacombe home
A father and son took it upon themselves to tackle an “open bin” in their backyard after years of it being used as a dumping ground.
Nelson and Jacob Shardey, from Seacombe, with the help of others in their community have tried to clear a barren patch of land next to their home on Borough Road. Nelson is a long-standing figure in the local community having run a newsagents there for years.
Council aiming for Grange Road works to be finished by Christmas
Work is being done to reopen a high street by Christmas after a year and a half of disruptive road works, Wirral Council has said.
Grange Road in Birkenhead town centre has been dominated by construction work for over a year as part of a regeneration scheme of the wider town centre. The scheme was intended to “improve the look and feel of these areas” but the project has been slammed due to delays and disruption.

Click Me £15m Dock Branch Park edges closer
Initial works to create a brand new £15m park in Wirral may not be far away. The new green space is part of a major project that would also see 1,600 homes built.
The Dock Branch Park is a regeneration project being delivered by Wirral Council, looking to transform a former railway line that cuts through central Birkenhead from Green Lane to Wirral Waters.
Sugar & Spice Festival returns to Port Sunlight this autumn
A ‘food, drink and little luxuries’ festival is coming to Port Sunlight for its autumn edition, bringing together Merseyside’s best local makers.
Presented by Port Sunlight Village Trust and award-winning Wirral chocolatier The Chocolate Cellar, the Sugar & Spice Festival will be open to explore on Saturday 4 October, 11am–4pm. It will take over the beautiful Diamond landscaped park opposite Port Sunlight Museum in the centre of the village.
Councillor slams ‘endless’ Wirral traffic lights at road works
People are “waiting at endless temporary traffic lights” across a Merseyside area with “no sign of anybody doing any action,” a councillor has said.
Wirral Council officers said there may be many reasons why road works might be empty.

One of Wirral’s longest-serving councillors claims he was pressured by his former boss to scrap £32m plans and move Birkenhead Market into a former Argos.
Cllr Andrew Hodson, an independent Conservative councillor for Heswall, contacted the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) after it reported recent comments made by Liberal Democrat Cllr Stuart Kelly.
Merseyrail celebrates double win at National Rail Awards 2025
Merseyrail enjoyed a remarkable night of success at the National Rail Awards 2025, held in central London.
The prestigious event, which recognises excellence across the UK rail industry, saw Merseyrail named as finalists in seven categories, more than any other operator and walked away with two major awards.

Wirral Council leader calls for senior Conservative to go
Wirral Council’s Labour leader has called for a senior Conservative to be sacked from her job after accusing her of insulting the public’s intelligence over a multi-million pound regeneration scandal.
Cllr Paula Basnett hit out at Cllr Helen Cameron (pictured), the chair of the council’s audit committee, who has been charged with looking into the Birkenhead town centre regeneration project, which has gone £12m over budget.

The huge scheme aims to provide better transport options and improve a historic square in an area people have said needs to change.
Wirral councillor defends requests to remove flags
Attempts to take national flags down in one area of Wirral have been defended by a local politician who said they had left people “feeling targeted, confused and scared”.

Wirral Poetry Festival returns to Port Sunlight
The Wirral Poetry Festival returns to Port Sunlight for the fourth year with a weekend full of activities on 4 and 5 October.
There will be free events in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, including a children’s workshop and a poetry tour. Sessions by local groups including open mics will take place outside on The Green and there will be headline performances and a poetry slam in venues such as Gladstone Theatre Bar and the Church Hall.
Wirral Waters set to see £16m investment
Wirral Waters is set to see a £16m investment as plans go in for major changes that could see hundreds of jobs created.
Peel Waters said it had submitted three planning applications to Wirral Council to move plans forward to regenerate more of the Wirral docks in Birkenhead. Wirral Waters is a long-term project to completely transform the area with new jobs and homes.
Plans for new Wirral parking charges ‘pushed back’
Plans for new charges for 22 free car parks in Wirral are understood to have been pushed back in an “unexpected Christmas gift for shoppers”.
In September 2024, the local authority announced a plan to introduce charges at 22 car parks and on roads in three coastal areas where they are currently free. These proposals were later approved by Labour and Green councillors despite major public opposition.
New Aldi could be coming to Upton
A new Aldi could be coming to Upton as the first plans are revealed for the new budget supermarket.
Aldi, which is the UK’s cheapest supermarket, has announced plans to bring a new store to Champions Business Park at the junction of Arrowe Brook Road and Arrowe Park Road in Upton.
