Donald Trump has taken credit for the 2025 Ryder Cup taking place as planned ahead of his scheduled appearance at golf’s biggest team event. However, crucial decisions regarding the event were made long before his tenure as president.

The 45th Ryder Cup will take place from Friday to Sunday at Bethpage Black Course in Long Island, New York. The PGA of America and the State of New York announced Bethpage Black as the host in 2013, well before Trump took office for the first time. The tournament was initially planned for 2024 but was postponed to 2025 due to the pandemic. In August, Trump used his social media platform to endorse US captain Keegan Bradley and confirm his intention to attend the event.

“Keegan Bradley should DEFINITELY be on the American Ryder Cup Team – As Captain!!!… At the invite of the PGA Tour, I will be there on Tournament Friday!!!”

Trump has now asserted that actions taken by his administration – specifically an executive order to prevent a strike affecting New York City area public transit workers – were crucial in avoiding disruption of the Ryder Cup.

During a White House briefing on Monday, press secretary Karoline Leavitt said: “This event is one of the greatest sporting events in the world and it would not be taking place this year without President Trump’s help.

“President Trump signed an executive order last week preventing a strike that would have crippled the New York City area ahead of the tournament and at the request of the five unions who all represent workers on the Long Island railroad.”

Team US star Bryson DeChambeau has praised Trump for saving the Ryder Cup, telling the Daily Caller: “The Ryder Cup is a true, almost century-old tradition in the world of golf and sports, and it’s an incredible honour for Long Island to host the 2025 Ryder Cup.

“When the possibility of a strike threatened to disrupt transportation and attendance, President Trump stepped in and took the action needed to protect this world-class competition. Thanks to President Trump’s decisive leadership, the Ryder Cup experience will be everything fans and the golf community deserve.”

The course’s role in the tournament is deeply rooted in the competition’s planning timeline. Host venue selections, operational planning, and infrastructure agreements generally commence more than 10 years prior to the actual tournament dates.
