Former Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho was given his first real chance to impress Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca this week, following his summer move from United to Stamford Bridge.
After being an unused substitute upon his return to Old Trafford last weekend, where he didn’t get the friendliest of welcomes, Garnacho was named in the starting XI for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup third round clash against Lincoln City.
However, it was a difficult game for the winger. The Blues trailed the League One side 1-0 at halftime, but two quick-fire second-half goals from Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte saw Chelsea turn the game around.
Garnacho didn’t play a part in either goal and was booed by the home supporters throughout the game. He was then substituted just before the hour mark.
Following the game, TalkSPORT asked Maresca if the former United man had taken the opportunity given to him, to which he replied: “Absolutely.”
He then added, “It was not an easy game. That’s why I was upset first half because we know we need to do better.
“But overall, him [Garnacho], [Jamie] Gittens, they did very well.”
Garnacho will hope to get another chance to impress when Chelsea are back in action on Saturday afternoon, when they take on Brighton and Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge (3pm kick-off).
The winger has played just 11 minutes in the Premier League for his new club so far. He was an unused substitute against United last weekend, and Maresca explained why he didn’t make it off the bench.
“Garnacho was ready to go, but then Wes [Fofana] asked for the change because he was tired after a long time so we decided to go for Malo [Gusto],” he said.
“But the idea was to give Garnacho minutes.”
