A Bristol coach carrying 29 schoolchildren crashed off the road and into a ditch in Hampshire.

The incident, which occurred this morning (Thursday, September 25) resulted in minor injuries to a teacher and the driver.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said that none of the children were harmed, but one of the four teachers on board suffered a minor leg injury.

The coach driver also sustained minor injuries, reports the Express.

The police have informed the school and parents about the incident and warned that the road will remain closed until the coach, which was travelling from Bristol, is recovered.

The police have confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the incident and have advised other drivers to avoid the area if possible.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We are currently dealing with a single vehicle collision on the A36 between the Ower roundabout and junction 2 of the M27.

“A school coach, travelling from the Bristol area, left the southbound carriageway and went into a ditch.”

They added: “We understand that there were 33 passengers on board, 29 schoolchildren who were uninjured and four teachers, one of whom had a minor leg injury treated at the scene.

“The school is aware of the incident and all parents have been contacted.

“The driver sustained minor injuries. Emergency services are in attendance to facilitate the recovery of the vehicle.

“It is anticipated that the southbound carriageway will be closed for a number of hours this morning while this work takes place.

“We would ask motorists to avoid the area if possible and thank everyone for their patience while we deal with the vehicle recovery and continue our enquiries.”

A section of the southbound A36 was temporarily shut in the early hours of this morning between the Ower roundabout and junction 2 of the M27, leading to significant delays during rush hour.

National Highways has stated that they expect the incident to be cleared between 2.15pm and 2.30pm this afternoon.
