City of Amarillo, AT&T complete fiber internet project

  • 26 September 2025

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – After three years in the making, the City of Amarillo and AT&T announced the completion of its fiber internet project.

The City of Amarillo and AT&T contributed a combined $24 million to expand high-speed internet access to over 20,000 locations across the city.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Maverick Boys and Girls Club to celebrate the project’s completion.

A large motivation for the project stemmed from the pandemic and the challenges it presented for many students without reliable internet connections.

“When Amarillo went into lockdown, a lot of our students were trying to do remote learning and just didn’t have access at home. The schools did what they could, they put hotspots on buses. We tried to provide Wi-Fi in public areas where people could park and get their schoolwork done, but it highlighted the digital divide problem that we did in Amarillo,” said Rich Gagnon, assistant city manager and CIO.

In addition to the fiber internet project, AT&T also presented a $20,000 check to the Amarillo Area Foundation to help fund digital literacy programs for adult survivors of domestic abuse.
