The barn near Cardiff is going to auction with a guide price of £139,000 – but you’ll need a 4×4A slice of rural near the capital(Image: Auction House Wales)
If a slice of rural peace sounds tempting but you don’t want to be too far from a busy urban area then maybe hunting down a former barn might be an option – but finding one that ticks both boxes might not be easy.
Some barns have been fully converted into a character-packed home and some are literally just four stone walls, a roof (maybe) and an earth or flagstone floor that is in need of a major renovation to be habitable for humans and not animals.
If you wander through the lanes between Cardiff and Caerphilly you will probably have passed this cute stone barn that is a bit of everything – it’s surrounded by fields yet a short drive to the city and the town – it’s not fully habitable on a permanent, full-time basis but it is happy to host a visit with some surprise finds inside. Step inside the barn to find a rustic, solid wood country kitchen with a farmhouse dining table and chairs and a seating area nestled around a traditional Esse stove and a ladder up to a mezzanine sleeping area, with further scope to develop this area according to the agent.

It appears that much of the inside added features will be staying with the sale of the barn, with the seller keen to retain ‘ the charm that this much-loved building has to offer’ but further details on exactly what items are staying and which are ending up in a removal van should be further established by a potential buyer.
Maybe surprisingly the property comes with domestic mains water and can also boast solar panels on its roof and sits in about 0.79 acres of land, which is a bonus to the absorbing mountain views that surround the property.

The barn is going under the hammer online with Auction House Wales with a guide price of £139,000 but it cannot, currently at least, be called a home. According to the agent the barn might date back over 400 hundred years but that the last occupancy was back in 1910, and the building does not currently allow for permanent residency.
Auctioneer Marc Morrish suggests that any interested party should make their own investigations regarding whether the barn, once fully converted, could become a home. He states: “In our opinion the building would offer scope as a retreat or studio and would also make ideal holiday accommodation given its attractive semi-rural but accessible location.”

The surrounding garden can offer a patio for relaxing, alfresco dining and feeling immersed in nature, while watching the stars appear over the mountain, and there’s enough land to establish a smallholding to support growing your own produce. Access is via a private, gated driveway and a track that leads down to the barn, so using a 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially after a period of wet weather. But don’t worry if you want to view the barn and you have a Mini because the auctioneer will give you a lift.

Viewing is strictly by block booking appointments through Auction House Wales, with the company suggesting parking at The Travellers Rest car park, which is only a short distance away, and then potential bidders will be driven down to the property by the auctioneer.
Marc adds: “Please note that payment or registration input may be required at The Travellers Rest and we would ask all attendees to acknowledge the open trade of the establishment, and therefore limit vehicle attendance if at all possible.” Why not book a very tasty meal at this charming thatched pub and restaurant for after your barn visit?
