Primark has made a new addition to its Manchester store, but it’ll only be there once a week.

The retailer has partnered with The Seam to offer a simple clothing repairs service in its Market Street branch.

In a trial lasting from now until December, every Friday it will offer shoppers a same-day repair and alterations service to provide a simple yet essential way to fix a small rip or tear in their favourite pieces.

Shoppers will be able to book an appointment online via Eventbrite and walk-ins will be welcome but subject to availability.

At their appointment, the customer will meet The Seam Maker, discuss their garment, and leave it for 20 to 30 minutes (or return later in the day). The item will then be ready to collect, freshly repaired and ready to wear.

With prices starting from £3 to £10 for simple services, it’s a lower cost than The Seam’s typical repair service as Primark has subsidised the cost to encourage more customers to see the value of repair and help people to make clothes last longer.

Vicki Swain, product longevity lead at Primark, said: “We want to make simple clothing repairs and alterations easier to access and more affordable for our customers and we’re excited to see what this partnership with The Seam will bring to local shoppers in Manchester.

“Simple repairs are a great way to make clothes longer lasting and we know there’s growing demand for it. We are looking forward to the response in our Manchester Market Street store and seeing its potential as an important fixture on the high street.”

Layla Sargent, CEO of The Seam, said: “The Seam exists to make repair accessible for all, and it’s exciting to see a major high street retailer like Primark bring our service in-store.

“By subsidising repairs, they’re making it possible for everyday shoppers to access what has too often been seen as a luxury – having clothes tailored to fit and extending the life of the pieces they love. “I’m especially excited that Primark has chosen to bring The Seam’s service into their Manchester store. With the city’s rich fashion and textile heritage, it feels like the perfect place to show how repair and alterations can be part of the everyday shopping experience.”

According to the global environmental action charity WRAP, two in five (42%) people admit to throwing away clothes they would’ve liked to have kept because they couldn’t find a way to get them repaired. Meanwhile, nearly a quarter (24%) say the cost of repairs is a major reason they choose not to fix their clothes.

The Seam will be on the lower ground floor space of the Manchester Market Street store in the pop-up area next to the Click & Collect desk, every Friday from now until December 19, between 9am and 5pm.
