A large emergency response is currently at the scene of an incident near the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.

Around 7.40pm on September 26, police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the scene after reports of the incident.

Edinburgh Live understands the Scottish fire service were called to reports of a possible chemical spill at The Institute of Genetics and Cancer.

It’s understood the building is run by the University of Edinburgh and not NHS Lothian. Fire crews are in attendance to establish the full circumstances.

Pictures taken from the scene show the large emergency response outside the building on Crewe Road South. Fire crews were made aware at 7.40pm, and three appliances are currently in attendance.

A spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a possible chemical spill. We got the call at 7.40pm and three appliances are there at the moment.”

One concerned onlooker said: “Something happened at the Western General Hospital, bunch of fire cars and smaller ambulance vehicles.”

Police Scotland and University of Edinburgh have been approached for comment.
