Birmingham police have had special stop and search powers extended for 12-hours overnight.

The Section 60 powers, covering Washwood Heath and Ward End, started at 6pm tonight and will last until 6am tomorrow, Sunday, September 28.

It follows a shooting where gunshots were fired at a car, on Ward End Park Road, just after 2am, on Monday, September 22.

In a statement, police said: “We are continuing to use Section 60 powers in parts of Washwood Heath and Ward End this evening.

“It follows recent serious incidents including a firearms discharge in Ward End Park Road.

“The Section 60 powers allow us to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds.

“It will be in place for 12 hours from 6pm on 27 September until 6am on 28 September.
