A bakery in Scotland became so popular that it was forced to bring in crowd control after queues began spilling onto the street and raising safety concerns.

Lannan Bakery, situated on Hamilton Place in Stockbridge in the heart of Edinburgh, has witnessed customer demand rocket since opening its doors in July 2023.

The establishment, operated by award-winning Scottish baker Darcie Maher, became an internet sensation for its creative pastries and routinely draws lines of enthusiastic customers that wind down the street.

However, the enormous number of visitors created difficulties in the narrow-pavemented location, especially during school run times.

Mums and dads from Stockbridge Primary School complained that the throngs were pushing children onto the road, triggering safety worries, reports the Express.

As a result, Lannan was compelled to employ a dedicated queue warden to control the masses and ensure youngsters and parents could pass safely.

Just eight customers are allowed inside the bakery at any one time, and the rest must wait outside under the steward’s supervision.

“The safety of the children and parents at Stockbridge Primary School is a priority for us at Lannan. We continue to work closely with the school and have engaged a queue warden to manage the queue,” Ms Maher told BBC Scotland.

“A new full-time member of staff has been brought on board for this purpose.”

Lannan’s menu varies regularly and features viennoiserie, custard slices, pains suisses, and cardamom buns, alongside limited-run seasonal creations. Earlier this year, the bakery’s success was solidified when it was awarded ‘Pastry Opening of the Year’ at the 2024 Pastry Awards by La Liste.

The bakery continues to enjoy unwavering popularity.

This autumn, Ms Maher plans to broaden the brand with the introduction of Lannan Pantry in Stockbridge, offering a range of products from seasonal vegetables and French cheeses to in-house sausages, terrines and pâté en croûte.

While pastry enthusiasts may face slightly longer queues, Lannan is implementing new crowd control measures to ensure safety for the local community, particularly schoolchildren passing by one of Edinburgh’s most sought-after food destinations.

The bakery has received a rating of 3.9 out of five on Tripadvisor. A review said: “Luckily the sun was shining. Therefore, it was not bad that we had to queue outside for a while, before we were allowed in this small business. We bought (stick) bread, cinnamon buns and a croissant. Then it turned out that they were more than worth the wait: all very tasty!”

Meanwhile another customer said: “We got one savoury pastry, very tasty and 3 sweet. The chocolate/hazelnut twice baked pastry was mediocre at best, the rest were tasty.

“We arrived at 8.45am on a Sunday and waited for a full hour in the queue. Most of the pastries were quite expensive. It was good to try it once but I wouldn’t wait in the queue again.”
