Breaking:Rory McIlroy confronts fans over bizarre item at Bethpage Black

McIlroy furiously confronted more American Ryder Cup fans on Sunday, after they used squeaky rubber ducks in a desperate bid to put him off.

The Team Europe superstar has clashed with the rowdy locals across all three days of the tournament, with the anger reaching boiling point on Saturday when he screamed ‘f*** you’ at multiple fans on the 18th green.

But the frustrations continued into Sunday – and in bizarre fashion – after he was continuously put off by the use of a small plastic toy.

McIlroy comes up short

That is agonizingly close for McIlroy. His putt for bogey stops just short of the hole – much to the pleasure of the fans watching on nearby.

Scheffler, meanwhile, also missed his par putt but sank his effort for a bogey – giving him the lead in this one.

Morikawa finding form

Colin Morikawa is heating up! The American goes 1UP against Tyrrell Hatton after a superb 17-foot putt on the fifth.

Hatton had an opportunity to keep it level but missed his 20-foot putt.

Meanwhile, it’s A/S between Sam Burns and Robert MacIntyre, as well as Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm.

Fitzpatrick fights back

The momentum swings once again.

This time, it’s Fitzpatrick who asserts himself. After a storming run from DeChambeau in the previous three holes, the Brit has fought back.

After chipping in from the rough, he pulls off a solid putt to apply the pressure. However, DeChambeau is able to match him.

Morikawa pulls even

Over on the fourth, Colin Morikawa putts for an eagle and levels the score in his match against Tyrrell Hatton.

He did get somewhat lucky after Hatton narrowly missed his own eagle putt. On to the fifth hole!

A/S between McIlroy and Scheffler

There’s still nothing to separate McIlroy and Scheffler after nine holes.

The American missed a glorious opportunity for the lead with a seven-foot putt for a birdie on the ninth – before McIlroy also sinks it for par.

Plenty to play for as they head into the back nine.

Thomas cuts the deficit

Justin Thomas has started the back nine as he means to go on.

The American wins the tenth hole with a simple par after Tommy Fleetwood sent his approach shot past the hole and ended with a bogey.

Big putt from Bryson

Bryson DeChambeau was 5DN, then 4DN, and now it’s only 3DN!

A huge putt from the big-hitting American to send the crowd wild on 9. Hammer down as he heads to the back nine…

Schauffele shocker

From 2UP to A/S in two quick holes for Xander Schauffele, who has surrendered his lead to Spaniard Jon Rahm.

The LIV star has been in incredible form at Bethpage – one of Europe’s top scorers – and he won’t be letting this one go without a fight.

Europe now lead in five matches, USA lead in two, and four are level.

And a dropped shot for Straka too…

JJ Spaun moves in on his European opponent at the fourth, with Straka bogeying and the American taking advantage.

That leaves Straka now 1UP, and there’s plenty of games right in the balance.

Rose drops a shot

Trouble for Justin Rose on the 10th, already 1DN against New York native Cam Young.

He found the bunker with his third shot, but has just managed to stick it close with his fourth. It’ll be a bogey, and Young has two putts from the fringe to win the hole.

The first misses by inches, and it’s a tap-in par. The American goes 2UP.

DeChambeau finally – FINALLY – gets going to pull a hole back on Matt Fitzpatrick, but it’s only because of an error from the Englishman.

Bryson holes a short par putt to pull it back to 4DN.

Fallon on the Fairway

There’s no shortage of star power at Bethpage today – and it’s not just on the tee sheet.

Jimmy Fallon and Nate Bargatze, two of the biggest names in comedy, were spotted in the stands together on Sunday .

Fallon, a Long Island native, looked right at home among the raucous New York crowd, while Bargatze soaked in the atmosphere.

Straka goes 2UP on Spaun

Now, to two men who are yet to be mentioned; Sepp Straka and J.J. Spaun.

The seventh match of the day is in full swing and it’s Europe’s Straka who is 2UP through three holes. His putting game has been on fire.

Elsewhere, Rose nearly levels the score but missed a putt for birdie.

Cam Young goes 1UP on Rose

Cameron Young may be a Ryder Cup rookie but he’s playing like a veteran out on Bethpage Black today.

The American, on the seventh hole, moves 1UP against Justin Rose after the Team Europe star sent his putt six-feet past the hole.

It was a huge opportunity for Young and he made no mistake.

Meanwhile, Matt Fitzpatrick is now 4UP on Bryson DeChambeau.

On an afternoon – and weekend – where very little is going right for Team USA, this certainly gave the home crowd something to cheer about.

Nightmare for DeChambeau

Things are going from bad to worse for Bryson.

Fitzpatrick seems unnerved by DeChambeau’s impressive drives and is making up for it with his own stunning approach shots.

On the fifth, he sends a tidy approach into the center of the green, setting up a 15-footer for birdie.

Bryson can’t match it – his second shot drifts into the front-left bunker. He plays a solid recovery to five feet… but it’s not enough.

Fitzpatrick pours in the birdie putt to go 3UP through five – and the American fan favorite is getting steamrolled so far.

Thomas eagles on the sixth

Justin Thomas – take a bow! The American cuts the lead down to one with a stunning eagle on the sixth.

His approach shot ends up bouncing into the hole, much to the delight of the roaring USA fans at Bethpage Black.

That might be the shot of the weekend.

Will it count for anything though? Probably not.

Match 8 set to begin

As things begin to heat up, the eighth match of the day is set to begin with Russell Henley and Shane Lowry at the tee box.

Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood has maintained his lead over Justin Thomas after both men settled for par on the fifth.

It’s all square between Young and Rose through the seventh. The Englishman missed a crucial putt to give his rival a route back in.

‘DeChambeau looking flat’

Matt Fitzpatrick has sucked a lot of the hostility and energy from the crowds following his match against Bryson DeChambeau. The Englishman is two up after four holes, with DeChambeau looking very flat.

But one young girl hasn’t given up the fight. She can’t have been older than 10 and she just broke the silence by shouting – much to her dad’s amusement: ‘Where are the braces, Matt?’

Fast start for Europe

The blue wave is crashing down on Bethpage – and it’s coming fast.

Just an hour into the singles, Europe have seized control of the early matches, quieting the New York crowd and edging closer to glory.

A reminder that it’s 12-5 to Europe.

Scheffler’s struggles

It’s fair to say that this has been a week to forget for Scottie Scheffler.

The world no. 1 is 0-4 at this year’s Ryder Cup and it doesn’t look like his fortunes will be changing anytime soon after struggling on the second.

McIlroy meanwhile, despite the ongoing jeers from the crowd, kept his cool to drain a 20-foot putt for birdie to take the lead.

Bryson DeShambles

Perhaps that’s harsh but Bryson DeChambeau made a real mess of that.

The USA star bogeys on the third after missing from close range. His 10-foot putt was completely overhit and left him with too much to do.

Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, played a superb bunker shot to secure par on the hole. He’s now 2UP thru 3.

Europe draw first blood…

Fitzpatrick strikes first!

Bryson DeChambeau will be fuming with that. After his monstrous drive to start, he was quickly caught up by his European counterpart.

Fitzpatrick showed some superb approach play and sunk his putt from seven feet – while DeChambeau shot wide from eight-and-a-half.

Meanwhile, the heavyweight match-up of the day is about to begin – with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler now at the tee box.

Elsewhere, Rose has now tied things up with Young on the third hole.

Nothing to separate Fleetwood and Thomas

It’s par for both men on the first hole. Thomas missed a long putt for birdie before Fleetwood followed suit.

Meanwhile, up next, we have Bryson DeChambeau and Matt Fitzpatrick.

The American starts things off with a terrific drive which, again, is met with a loud cheer from the home fans.

Despite all the negativity of late, they’re in fantastic spirits.

Young sets the tone for USA…

Take a bow Cameron Young! The Ryder Cup rookie sinks a stunning 25-foot putt to go one-up on Rose and it’s met by a roar from the crowd.

Meanwhile, the next match-up is set to start – with Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood about to tee off.

Both men land right at the first cut and are making their way down the fairway. You can feel the energy building around Bethpage…

Rose leads Team Europe out, tasked with setting the tone and he finds the fairway – while Young pulls one right and lands in the rough.

A reminder that USA need to win 9 of the remaining 11 points in order to stage a historic comeback…

The Final Handshake

Along with Riath, we’ve also got Senior Sports Writer Daniel Matthews at Bethpage today – who will be providing all the insight from Long Island.

Captain’s Luke Donald and Keegan Bradley just shared a final handshake on the makeshift bridge between the clubhouse and the first tee. The grandstand here was full by 9:45am on Sunday, more than two hours before the first tee shot was fired.

A man carrying two American flags just sprinted out on to the first tee and down the hill towards the crowd. The grass looks very wet but thankfully he managed to keep his footing. It would have rather summed up this American performance had he taken a tumble

Captain Luke Donald remains the calm eye in the storm.

His decisions have been precise and his demeanor steady amid one of the most chaotic Ryder Cups in recent memory.

More fan chaos on the cards?

Ryder Cup crowds are famously partisan. That’s the deal. But this year’s crowd at Bethpage Black has raised eyebrows – and blood pressure.

Booing during backswings. Personal heckles. Chants aimed at caddies. Even the occasional beer tossed in the direction of a WAG.

It’s been electric, yes – but borderline toxic at times. The New York crowd came to play… and they didn’t bring golf claps.

He was here a full two hours before his round, doing drills with Phil Kenyon (the putting guru who also works with Scheffler, among others). Close to an hour before his opponent Cam Young emerged.

Hovland: ‘It’s heartbreaking to miss out’

Team Europe star Viktor Hovland has spoken.

“There is nothing more I would like to do than be out there representing Team Europe and trying to help them win the Ryder Cup today.

Not being able to do so is pretty heartbreaking. I will be backing my team as hard as I can and rooting them on.”

Mickelson shuts down Ryder Cup captaincy talk

Amid Team USA’s abysmal showing this year, eyes are already turning to 2027 – and Phil Mickelson has officially ruled himself out of the picture.

In response to a post from Lee Westwood on X – ‘Hey Phil Mickelson fancy Adare Manor 2027?’ – Mickelson replied bluntly:

“No rumors. My Ryder Cup involvement is over. I’m happy being a spectator and rooting for Team USA.”
