The First Minister spoke at the Labour Party Conference criticising the Reform Party
First Minister Eluned Morgan spoke alongside her fellow Labour Party politicians on the first day of the annual Labour Party Conference this afternoon – Sunday, September 28. Within her speech she criticised the Reform Party, as well as Plaid Cymru, as they both top the latest polls in Wales ahead of next year’s Sennedd elections.
As she began her speech at the party’s national conference in Liverpool, the First Minister addressed the recent poll results that predicts Labour losing seats in both the UK and in Wales to Reform. She referred to the party, led by Nigel Farage, as a “carnival of charlatans” and “snake oil salesmen”.
She said: “Let’s be brutally honest, the polls are not looking good. People are angry. Disillusioned. Our voice – the voice that’s always fought for them – is getting drowned out by the carnival of charlatans and the circus of snake oil salesmen.” For the biggest stories in Wales first, sign up to our daily newsletter here
Continuing on with her criticism of the party led by Nigel Farage, Morgan spoke of Reform’s plan to “gut the NHS. Flog and frack everything that moves,” and “turn Wales into their testing ground for an ideology that puts profit before people.”
The leader of Welsh Labour also spoke negatively of Plaid Cymru as their support continues to grow throughout Wales, posing a threat to the party’s hold on power in Wales.
She said: “Mark my words – Wales will fall into chaos if either Plaid or Reform wins in May. What we need is experience and stability in an age of instability – that’s what Welsh Labour can offer.”
Speaking of Plaid Cymru, Morgan said the party provides: “Promises without plans. Ambition without answers. Easy words on independence. But when they had the chance to support our communities with extra cash they voted with the Tories to block it.”
Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens also spoke at the conference in Liverpool, attacking Plaid and Reform.
She claimed that the work Labour have done in Wales is “under threat” from the Reform Party that “don’t care about Wales.”
She called out Farage for bringing his “patronising politics” to Wales “with disrespect, division and derision for our communities.”
A Reform UK Wales spokesman said: “Welsh Labour’s desperate lies and mudslinging can’t hide their 26 years of abject failure, with Wales now sitting at the bottom of the table in every meaningful metric.
“Only Reform can deliver the change that Welsh communities deserve after almost three decades of neglect by the Labour government.”
Plaid Cymru spokesperson said in response to the statements by the First Minister: “Eluned Morgan and Jo Stevens are the best recruiting agents Plaid Cymru could ask for. We thank them for a weekend of free publicity.
“The First Minister and the Secretary of State for Wales had an opportunity today to tell the people of Wales what both of their governments have delivered for them, but they came up with nothing beyond free school meals which they voted against countless times, and which is only happening because of Plaid Cymru.
“After 26 years in power it speaks volumes than Labour have nothing positive to say about themselves, only smears against a party which is popular with disaffected Labour voters. In the Senedd elections next year, Wales can break free from Labour and vote for a progressive Plaid Cymru government that will deliver a fairer, more prosperous future for all.”
