Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has been reintegrated into the first-team group.

Malacia expressed his desire to leave United in the summer and was widely categorised in the ‘bomb squad’ by the media, alongside Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony.

Interest in Malacia was thin on the ground, and a proposed move to Elche collapsed on transfer deadline day. Malacia was included in United’s registered squad with the Premier League, and Ruben Amorim said: “He is returning with contact with the ball with the Under-21s, then we will see.”

After training with the academy, Malacia has now been welcomed back to the first-team group, raising the possibility of him being named in a Premier League matchday squad again.

Club sources have stressed it was always the plan to reintegrate Malacia into the first-team group.

In January, Malacia was shipped out to PSV Eindhoven on loan and made just six starts in all competitions during that stint. The Dutch club declined their option to sign him permanently.

Malacia’s time at United has been scuppered by a knee injury, which required two rounds of surgery.

The 26-year-old initially played through the injury at the end of the 2022/2023 season. Injections were used to get through games. Malacia then underwent surgery, but required further surgery after a botched first attempt.

After 517 days on the sidelines, Malacia made his return for the U21s against Huddersfield last November.
