Disruptions on the Bee Network are set to remain as bus drivers continue their strike for the second day this week.

More than 2,000 staff at three Bee Network bus operators are undertaking industrial action after negotiations broke down earlier this week. Around 1,000 workers from First, Metroline and Stagecoach will be out of work from Tuesday (September 30) to Thursday (October 2).

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), which runs the Bee Network, said on Sunday that Unite the Union had suspended the strikes at First and Stagecoach while they balloted members on a new offer.

However, the union issued a further statement on Monday, confirming that four Greater Manchester depots – Sharston, Hyde Road, Ashton and Wythenshawe – will still walk out, causing major disruption to services in the area.

It comes amid a row over pay affecting workers at Stagecoach Manchester, First Bus Rochdale and Metroline Manchester, which are three of the companies that run Bee Network services under the franchising system launched two years ago.

Metroline said it was ‘disappointed’ that strike action was going ahead, and said they had put forward an improved offer of an 8.8 per cent increase over two years.

A Metroline spokesperson added: “Our improved offer is in line with Stagecoach’s offer, who have agreed to suspend their strike action whilst the offer is put to their drivers. Our improved offer exceeds inflation and would ensure that our drivers would continue to be amongst the best paid in the country.

“We value our drivers and the work they do and our team has worked tirelessly to present an offer that meets their expectations. We remain open and committed to finding resolution and want to avoid further industrial action which disrupts the everyday lives of our communities.”

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Metroline has consistently put profits before people throughout this dispute and workers have quite rightly had enough.

“Bus drivers do difficult and important jobs and deserve to be paid fairly. They will have Unite’s full backing throughout the industrial action.”

The union held a four-day strike earlier this month, from September 19 until September 22. It also announced six more days of action in October.

Danny Vaughan, TfGM’s Chief Network Officer, said: “While we’re pleased First and Stagecoach staff have called off planned strikes, it’s disappointing that Metroline staff are continuing with industrial action this week. That’s despite the fact that a revised and improved offer was made by the operator. This will disrupt journeys in parts of Greater Manchester, with around 130 routes not expected to operate over the next three days.

“Our aim, as it has been throughout, is to keep passengers informed and support them to make journeys wherever possible. Anyone travelling over the next few days is encouraged to check before travelling, allow extra time for their journey and plan an alternative if your service is affected. The Bee Network website will be the best place to get the latest updates on services.”

While most bus services in Greater Manchester will run as normal this week, strike action will continue to affect Metroline services from tomorrow.

The below bus services will not operate from Tuesday (September 30) to Thursday (October 2). Passengers are being encouraged by TfGM to check before travelling.
