The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its “Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report” for the quarter ending December 31, 2024, offering a detailed look at the nation’s telecom sector.
A key highlight of the report is the data on internet and broadband subscribers, which shows a substantial reach across the country.
According to the TRAI report, the total number of internet subscribers in India reached 970.16 million. However, there was a marginal decrease in the growth rate, with a 0.14% change over the previous quarter.
Within the total internet subscriber base, 944.96 million are broadband subscribers, while 25.20 million are narrowband subscribers. The majority of internet subscribers access the internet wirelessly, with 928.96 million users, compared to 41.21 million wired internet subscribers.
The urban-rural divide in internet access is also evident in the report. Urban internet subscribers numbered 563.19 million, while rural internet subscribers reached 406.97 million.
The report also provides data on internet penetration per 100 population. Overall internet subscribers per 100 population stand at 68.86. There’s a significant difference between urban and rural penetration, with 111.64 urban internet subscribers per 100 population and 44.99 rural internet subscribers per 100 population.
In addition, the report notes that the total outgoing minutes of usage for internet telephony were 87.53 million. India has 46,878 public Wi-Fi hotspots, with a total data consumption of 15,714 TB on these hotspots.
