What is NorthMark Strategies? The firm announced earlier this year that it is investing $2.8bn in a supercomputing facility in South Carolina, but apart from that little is known about it. Insiders suggest that it may be linked to British quant trading firm G-Research, which has been expanding in the US since the start of the year.

NorthMark Strategies appears to have been created at the end of 2024. Its website seems to date to January, and filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its logos in November of last year.

Northmark describes itself It describes itself as a “leading investment firm”, managing a “diverse portfolio” and running a high-performance computing platform. It doesn’t disclose its founder, but the firm’s president is former G-Research COO Jen Byrne, who spent six years at G-Research before joining Northmark last November.

Northmark didn’t respond to requests to comment for this article. There are signs, however, that it intends to become a provider of data centres and compute management to quant trading firms.

Northmark’s coincidental links to G-Research don’t end at Byrne. For example, the address listed for Northmark is 32 Avenue of the Americas in New York; it’s located on the 26th floor which is also home to Dorlton Capital Management, an investment firm linked to G-Research founder Peter de Putron.

Insiders suggest that NorthMark was created in order to handle data centres and compute management for G-Research and its affiliated entities, rather than building out those functions in-house. It appears to offer its services to other firms too, though, publicising a contact email on its site for companies to “discover how NorthMark Strategies can drive your success.” G-Research and Jen Byrne did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

The firm has been hiring. William McLaughlin, a lead data engineer formerly of Santander joined in December last year, and Matt Murray, a lead full-stack engineer joined from JPMorgan in July. Both men are based in Dallas, Texas, home to G-Research’s marquee US office.
