Sir Keir Starmer stepped up his war on Reform UK today by blaming Brexit for the English Channel migrant crisis and dubbing the small boats ‘Farage boats’.
The Prime Minister said Nigel Farage had been ‘wrong’ to claim that leaving the European Union would make no difference to migration policy.
Sir Keir pointed to the Dublin Convention that allowed pre-Brexit Britain to return some asylum seekers to the continent.
He told GB News: ‘I would gently point out to Nigel Farage and others that before we left the EU, we had a returns agreement with every country in the EU and he told the country it would make no difference if we left. He was wrong about that.
‘These are Farage boats, in many senses, that are coming across the Channel.’
It follows the Prime Minister’s speech at the Labour conference in Liverpool yesterday, in which he put controlling immigration, growing the economy and restoring pride in Britain at the heart of his plan to take on Reform.
Now you can vote in the Daily Mail’s latest poll on whether you agree with Sir Keir that Brexit is to blame for the Channel migrant crisis.
In one of two polls yesterday, readers were asked: ‘Keir Starmer claims Nigel Farage ‘doesn’t like Britain’ – is he right?‘ Out of 86,000 votes, 91 per cent said ‘no’ and 9 per cent said ‘yes’.
In the other poll, the question was: ‘Should VAT be added to private healthcare costs?‘ Out of 41,000 votes, 86 per cent said ‘no’ and 14 per cent said ‘yes’.
