A man has been jailed for eleven and a half years after a serious assault inside a bar and additional drug offences. At around 2.30am on Thursday, May 23, Mark Ferguson assaulted a man by striking him with a glass in Maloney’s bar, on Westfield Street, St Helens, which left his victim with serious head and eye injuries.

The 38-year-old, of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday, April 23 to eight years after being found guilty of wounding with intent.

He was also sentenced yesterday for three years and six months, after admitting two unrelated offences of being concerned in supplying heroin and crack cocaine. He was arrested in April last year and linked to the ‘Mike and Gerry’ county line, which was supplying drugs from Huyton to Wirral. For the drugs offences, Ferguson was jailed for three and a half years.

Detective Inspector James Rotheram said: “This was an extremely nasty and unprovoked attack that left the victim needing eye surgery.

“People should be able to enjoy a night out without being subjected to any kind of violence or fear of being assaulted.“Ferguson will now begin a significant prison sentence, during which he can reflect on the serious harm caused by his actions. “He was also sentenced yesterday after admitting supplying drugs. We know the devastation that drugs cause and Merseyside Police remains relentless in our pursuit of these criminals and ending their drugs trade.”Anyone who has any information about drug dealing or crime in their area or anyone who is concerned about someone who may be being exploited, can contact Crimestoppers completely anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via their online Give information anonymously | Crimestoppers.
