According to Tax Agency figures for 2023, Valldemossa is no longer the second richest municipality in Spain. It was in 2022, the consequence of a tax return by one particularly wealthy individual. Second place was somewhat artificial, and Valldemossa now finds itself back down the list in 39th place.
Valldemossa is also no longer Mallorca’s richest municipality; it has been usurped by Esporles, which is number 33 in Spain. Other Mallorcan municipalities in the Spanish top one hundred are Bunyola (62), Puigpunyent (75) and Santa Maria (79). Sant Joan de Labritja (86) is the only municipality in Ibiza in the top one hundred.
The fall in Valldemossa’s average personal income is striking. In 2022 it was €67,257, but thanks to one individual. In 2023 it was €46,046. The average income in Esporles also fell – from €49,569 to €47,908, far behind the richest municipalities in Spain. This is almost half of what a resident of Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid) declares – an average annual income of €88,011 per year. This municipality has led the list for years.
At the other end of the scale, the poorest municipality in Mallorca – in the Balearics in fact – is Son Servera, which plummeted from 845 in Spain in 2022 to 1,060 in 2023. The average income was 26,948 euros, two euros lower than in Capdepera, which was ranked 1,059.
Sant Llorenç, a Son Servera neighbour like Capdepera, is the third poorest municipality in the Balearics – 947th in Spain with an average income of 27,726 euros.
