Birmingham City owner Tom Wagner has backed his Head Coach Chris Davies amid speculation over his future, speaking to Sky Sports.

Birmingham City entered the 2025/26 campaign full of momentum, having clinched last season’s League One title in record-breaking fashion.

Carrying that ambition into the transfer market, BCFC secured the signings of Tommy Doyle, Kyogo Furuhashi and Demarai Gray, aiming to strengthen their push for a return to the Championship play-off picture.

In practice, however, the team has struggled to find consistency. Early wins against Blackburn Rovers and Oxford United offered real encouragement for Davies’ side, but since mid-August, they have managed just one further victory.

A return of only five points from their last six Championship outings has stalled Birmingham’s promotion bid and placed growing pressure on their manager’s position. However, Owner Tom Wagner has come out and backed his manager, speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the draw to Wrexham on Friday night.

Wagner said: “Chris has the complete and total confidence of the board. Period. Full stop.”

“We are focused on process, and I am confident the process he is pursuing will pay dividends, and we will be competitors. The vast majority of people understand that.”

Wagner was amongst the Birmingham City fans at the Racecourse ground. He will have been happy to see his side come back from 1-0 down to secure a point, thanks to Patrick Roberts’ first goal for the club.

Wagner is learning from the last Championship stint

Tom Wagner and co made a very big error two years ago when they first took over the club. Popular manager John Eustace was sacked, replaced by Wayne Rooney, who oversaw the club’s drop to a relegation fight after joining in 5th place.

Rooney was then sacked and replaced by Tony Mowbray, and ultimately that led to the club’s relegation. Now back in the Championship, Wagner does not seem like he is going to do the same again.

In Davies, he has a good young coach who is going to struggle at times. Though it is easy to see why the pressure is growing, considering the squad available to the BCFC boss.

Results must improve for Birmingham City, even after Davies’ backing

Wagner’s backing of Davies might ease the short-term pressure on him, but the Blues’ boss will know that only better results can secure his future at St. Andrew’s. The BCFC chairman has made no secret of his lofty ambitions for the club, with the Sports Quarter project standing as a clear statement of intent.

With the Championship seemingly being wide open this season, it is a huge chance for someone to challenge for promotion. There is every chance Wagner believes that could be Birmingham City.

Given the investment over the last two years, there may still be a hint of higher expectations from the board. In a few weeks time if results do not improve, this speculation may return once again.
