A man has been arrested following a terrifying active shooting operation in Sydney‘s inner-west, with at least four injured and residents urged to stay indoors. 

Police rushed to Croydon Park about 7.45pm on Sunday following reports of a shooting, while roads were closed to motorists. 

About 9.30pm, a man was arrested in a building on Georges River Road and firearms were seized, NSW police said in a statement. 

Road closures remain in place, including stretches of Georges River Road and Brighton Avenue.

Local witnesses reported shots being fired from a rooftop with loud bangs being heard well after tactical police arrived at the scene, the Daily Telegraph reported. 

Residents were warned to ‘shelter in place’ while the major police operation unfolded, including the involvement of police helicopters and an armoured Bearcat vehicle. 

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson told the Daily Mail four patients had received treatment for varying injuries. 

A man aged in his 50s self-presented to Canterbury Hospital with a gunshot wound, the spokesperson said.

Two others self-presented to a nearby police station with minor injuries while another  has been transported to a nearby hospital with unconfirmed injuries, they said.

Authorities issued a text to residents urging the public to take shelter while a police helicopter relayed messages to the streets below. 

Concerned residents posted to social media checking in on friends and family and providing updates as the incident unfolded. 

Police will address the media from Burwood Police Station at 11pm.
