Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has praised summer signing Senne Lammens for simplifying things in between the sticks during the club’s 2-0 win over Sunderland.

The Belgian goalkeeper was given his first start in the top-flight by Ruben Amorim and helped keep a clean sheet against Regis Le Bris’ side.

There was one nervy moment for the 23-year-old, though, rushing out to close down Bertrand Traore while Bruno Fernandes also tracked back. That trio looked as though they’d collided inside the United box with the Sunderland winger looking for a penalty.

There was some contact, but not enough to award a penalty, as on-field referee Stuart Attwell in turn booked the Black Cats’ winger for simulation.

Aside from that, Lammens was widely praised by the United faithful for his performance and Rooney was among those to follow suit.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the United icon said: “I think the ‘keeper did well and he obviously had the misjudgement where he’s come out the box and that could end up a different way.

“I thought in the main he simplified things, which for a ‘keeper isn’t a bad thing. He didn’t take as many touches on the ball, he got the ball forward quick.

“He was effective. [Benjamin] Sesko has also been good at winning headers in the air and [Bryan] Mbeumo running in behind. I actually thought Manchester United got the tactics right.

“Ruben Amorim slightly changed his tactics and went with two forwards up top. It worked for the first 30 minutes. Sunderland had to change it early on in the first half.

“From there they saw the game out well and Sunderland didn’t really cause them many problems. So the result was the most important thing.”
