RCT Council has given an update on how nine major schools projects are progressing

An update has been given on nine new school projects currently under way in Rhondda Cynon Taf(RCT).
Cabinet members were recently told about how nine projects are going in the county borough with support from the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.
In March this year cabinet endorsed this next tranche of nine school investments as part of a £414m funding commitment over nine years.
The first is the new 3-19 ALN (additional learning needs) school in Clydach Vale and construction of the school is making important progress on the former Pavilions site, the council says.
The steel frame of the main building has recently been installed and the school is on course to be opened during the autumn of 2026.
Construction of the new sustainable primary school and community hub for Glyncoch is said to be progressing on the current Craig yr Hesg Primary site with the council saying the contractor is making good progress towards opening the new school during the late autumn of 2026.
A new 11-19 Welsh-medium school is planned for the current site of Ysgol Cwm Rhondda and design work is under way.
The project’s strategic outline case is approved and an outline business case is being drafted with construction work planned to start in summer 2026.

Initial discussions have taken place with the school to feed into early design concepts and a strategic outline case is currently being drafted. Construction work is planned to start on site during early 2027.
