A FISHPONDS primary school has said goodbye to a long-serving teacher.
Gerry Davis has retired after more than 21 years of service at Chester Park Junior School in Abingdon Road.
Since joining the school in 2003 Mr Davis has taught more than 600 children in his classes, and run clubs, events, activities and camps.
Head teacher Mike McNama said Mr Davis was a “truly remarkable” member of the school community who was beloved by pupils, parents, and staff alike.
Mr McNama said: “His commitment to Chester Park has been nothing short of extraordinary.
“In fact, some of the current parents were once children in his class—a testament to the lasting impact he has made across generations.
“Throughout his time at Chester Park Juniors, Gerry has consistently gone above and beyond.
“He has taught over 600 pupils, each one benefiting from his warmth, humour, and unwavering support. But Gerry’s contribution has always extended far beyond the classroom.
“Whether it was running clubs, acting in the Christmas play, attending Chester Park discos and fairs, chatting with parents and carers, or simply checking in on a colleague, Gerry has always embodied what it means to be part of a community.
“Former students often returned to visit, and the first question was always ‘Is Mr Davis here?’
“That speaks volumes about the care and connection he fostered.
“It was a delight to see many former parents and children come back to say their personal goodbyes at the end of term.”
The school paid tribute to Mr Davis’s positivity, “even after a Bristol Rovers relegation”, sense of camaraderie and genuine interest in others.
Also highlighted was his commitment to running school camps.
Mr McNama said: “Gerry has led more camps than perhaps any teacher in Bristol, bringing energy, enthusiasm, and fun that created unforgettable memories for countless children.
“Sport has always been a passion for Gerry, especially cricket, and we know he’ll continue to enjoy this in retirement.
“Now that he has crossed the Chester Park boundary rope for the final time, we want him to know how deeply he will be missed.
“From everyone at Chester Park, thank you, Gerry. Your humour, kindness, and dedication have shaped our school in ways that will be felt for years to come.
“We wish you a long, happy, and healthy retirement.”
