What can we learn from Germany in the early 1930s before World War Two?
Most of all, the need for us to stand united – for economic justice and basic universal human rights.
We must stand united against a brutal ethnic cleansing programme now being enacted across our once-United States. Against censorship. Against demonising and othering.
And against the kinds of crimes we read about in history class, and watched on screen in full colour and promised “never again”.
Some 2.2 million people are facing extreme forced starvation in Palestine. A million of them are children.
This has been confirmed by UN agencies, aid workers and journalists on the ground.
If it helps you to come to terms with it, one of the most respected Israeli-born genocide and Holocaust and genocide scholars in the world, Omer Bartov, just wrote in the New York Times, that his “inescapable conclusion has become that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people”.

What does that look like? Food imports being blocked or severely restricted. Farming, fishing and distribution infrastructure destroyed. Water access and sanitation collapsed. Aid trucks and healthcare workers delayed, denied or attacked. And starving people being executed at so-called aid-sites. This is a horror most of us cannot fathom or bear to face. But we must.
Not only do the allied forces of the West today ignore what we once promised to “never again” allow, but our nations are paying for it, our representatives arm the persecutors, and our police violently suppress any opposition, even classifying peaceful protesting as terrorism or hate crimes.
We must stand united, all together, against fascism in all its forms, with clear demands, or forget the lesson, forget the promises and miss a precious opportunity afforded to us once again – and lose more precious lives we cannot afford to lose.
All people are our people. All children are our children. Either we go up together or down together.
