Edinburgh’s North Bridge was closed off by fire crews on Tuesday morning while they dealt with an ongoing incident.
The incident saw the busy city centre road closed off to pedestrians and motorists with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) shutting the bridge at around 8.10am on Tuesday, October 7.
While the exact nature of the incident is unknown, restoration works appear to have been halted while the SFRS were in attendance.
One passerby, 50, said: “Firefighters were blocking both ends of the bridge – there was a cordon going up.
“The tall ladder appliance was at the Princes Street end and others at the top.
“It was chaos at that time of the morning with drivers turning around to try other routes.
“It wasn’t immediately clear what was going on but the workies from the bridge project had left the site and were congregated down near Princes Street.”
The £86m restoration works began on the bridge back in 2018 as after the Victorian structure was found to be in need of significant repairs to ensure it’s continued use for future generations.
Works were set to take around two years to complete but due to unexpected complications such as Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic and more deterioration than expected, they are still ongoing.
The SFRS have been approached for comment.
