Flight-fanatics and airport-aficionados of the capital city, gather round. I come bearing yet another reason to add to the ever-lengthening list of why London is so darn great. And today’s oh-so humble brag comes in the form of a London aviation hub that’s just been named the best airport in the whole country.

The accolade in question comes courtesy of the Travel Industry Awards that recently took place at London’s legendary Roundhouse. Now in its fifth year, the awards shine a light on the trailblazing travel companies that continue to fly high. The best, biggest, and brightest names in UK travel gathered at the Camden hotspot to find out who’d be taking home some of the most prestigious prizes in the industry. And a London airport got their hands on one of the most coveted awards of all.

London’s very own Gatwick Airport was crowned the UK & Ireland Airport of the Year, praised for its innovation and top-notch customer service. September was a pretty great month for London’s second largest airport, to be quite honest with you. The award comes hot on the heels of the official approval of its plans to build a second runway. Gatwick is currently one of the busiest single-runway airports in the whole world. The creation of a second runway could give the airport capacity to double its passenger numbers and offer over 100,000 extra flights a year.

The Travel Industry Awards are organised by the Travel Trade Gazette. They’re judged by a panel of senior travel professionals, media experts, and editors, ensuring a diverse array of perspectives and a fair and accurate selection process.

The Travel Industry Awards judges said on Gatwick Airport’s win: “Gatwick displayed impressive evidence of out-performing customer and product KPIs across the board. Strong examples of innovation and superb customer service makes this airport worthy of award-winner status, and despite its long-established position, it is still not failing to innovate, while keeping an eye on ensuring its customers receive top-notch service, as well as supporting travel agent partners.”
