The event took place at the Liner Hotel in Liverpool and featured a two-course lunch along with activities such as standing bingo and raffles.  In a heart warming moment, the bingo winner chose to give up her prize and donated the money back to the charity.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a time dedicated to increasing understanding of the disease, supporting those affected and raising funds for vital research and care services.

Organiser, Angela MacShane, has hosted the lunch every October for years. The event brings together past and present patients as well as anyone associated with the hospitals’ breast units.

“We all meet up once a year and have a lovely afternoon of lunch, raffles and bingo. It’s just a lovely get-together,” Angela said. “A lot of women walked in as strangers, but we’ve all left as friends. We’ve built up lovely relationships and have known each other for years. In addition, we’re raising money for the hospital’s breast units. If we want the best equipment for our patients, we have to pay for it and that’s the reality.”

Angela also urged women to check their breasts regularly. Inside each goodie bag was a flyer explaining when and how to check, and what to do if they notice any changes.

“If they just don’t look right to you, go straight to your doctor,” she said.
