Police advised schools to go into lockdown
Mead Vale Community Primary School in Weston-Super-Mare
A number of schools in Weston-super-Mare were told to go into lockdown today after a man with a weapon was reported roaming an area of the town.
A member of the public reported seeing the armed man in the Mead Vale area of the town on Tuesday afternoon (October 7).
Avon and Somerset Police advised schools in the area to go into lockdown while searches were carried out for the armed individual.
BristolLive understands that Mead Vale Community Primary School was among the schools affected by the measures.
Officers from the North Somerset Neighbourhood Policing Team searched the area and scanned CCTV footage and concluded the call has been made in good faith but nothing was found.
Worle police officers remained in Mead Vale throughout the afternoon and school-pick up to reassure parents.
Police will be back in the area on Wednesday, October 8, and are inviting concerned parents to speak to officers.
North Somerset Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This afternoon (Tuesday 7 October), officers responded to a call from a member of the public who reported seeing a male with a weapon in the Mead Vale area of Weston-super-Mare.
“Schools were advised by staff from our Contact Centre to go into lockdown while an extensive search of the surrounding area was carried out.

“Following these searches, and a review of available CCTV, it is thought to be a call with good intent and we do not believe there is any risk of harm to the wider public. “The Worle Neighbourhood Policing Team remained in the area throughout the afternoon and over school pick-up time to carry out reassurance patrols and to engage with the schools and to speak with parents. “They will return to the area tomorrow and we invite parents with any questions to speak with our officers.”
