Ange Postecoglou has opened up on a transfer near-miss during his time as Celtic manager, as he prepares to come up against the player.

The Australian attempted to sign Cho Gue-Sung for the Scottish Premiership champions in 2023.

However, a move never materialised, and the attacker went on to sign for Danish side FC Midtjylland for £2.6m.

Cho was on Celtic’s radar back in January 2023 after playing for South Korea at the World Cup.

Instead, the Hoops opted to sign Oh Hyeon-gyu, who has since signed for Genk in Belgium – and last week scored the winner against Rangers in the Europa League – with Cho happy to remain in the K-League at that time.

That coupled with the eventual departure of Postecoglou to Tottenham saw any potential move for Cho fall by the wayside.

The player has gone on to become a champion in Denmark with Midtjylland, although has struggled with injury over the past year until the start of this season.

He’s set to come up against Postecoglou’s Nottingham Forest team in the Europa League tonight.

“I tried really hard to bring him to Celtic, but he ended up turning me down, so I wasn’t happy about that,” Postecoglou told the media. “At that time he was doing really well, and you could see the qualities he had.

“His career has gone in a slightly different direction since then, but I still know him really well, because we studied him closely in the scouting department when we wanted to sign him.”
