Pubs across England are getting ready to remain open until 1am during World Cup late kick-offs, according to reports.
The potential move, which stemmed from FIFA’s proposals to tackle rising temperatures in North America, had meant that FIFA was likely to schedule certain matches to begin at 11pm or even 2am.
A Labour government source has now told Birmingham Live that pubs and bars across the nation are anticipated to extend their operating hours next summer as a way to navigate England fixtures that could take place late.
Exceptional national significance
The source claimed that the World Cup was likely to be designated an “occasion of exceptional national significance” and permit venues that typically close at 11pm to remain open for an additional two hours without needing to seek special authorisation.
FIFA vice-president Victor Montagliani explained: “On the kick-off times, lessons have been learnt. Heat is always an issue in our region because the summers are hot. Our media guys are in those conversations daily with European media, with other world media, in terms of what’s best.”
Montagliani explained: “It’s FIFA’s tournament, FIFA’s jurisdiction, FIFA makes those decisions,” said Montagliani at The Summit, part of Leaders Week London.
Montagliani added: “Whatever decision they make. We need to work out what’s feasible.”
In terms of drinks partnerships for the event, Diageo has recently signed up as official spirits supporter for FIFA World Cup 2026. The drinks giant will activate a portfolio of brands including Casamigos, Don Julio and Johnnie Walker across all 16 American host cities during the tournament and pubs across England are gearing up for a prosperous 2026.
Despite these green shoots, pub businesses have faced a hard time of late and continue to tackle challenges. This year, the British Beer and Pub Association CEO Emma McClarkin urged the government to react quickly in response to the “heartbreaking” pattern of closures, with the South East of England hardest hit by closures after more than 200 UK pubs shut within six months.
