Liverpool are reportedly already in discussions with a different defender as their pursuit of Marc Guehi has hit a roadblock.
Guehi’s deadline day move to Anfield broke down after the Eagles blocked the transfer at the last moment.
Arne Slot’s side now face competition from the likes of Manchester City to secure the signature of the Crystal Palace captain.
Liverpool could be forced to spend big to bring Guehi in during the January transfer window, and are now exploring alternative options in case a deal for the England international is unrealistic.

Last month, Football Insider revealed that Liverpool are weighing up a move for Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the Reds are the favourites in the race to land the highly-rated defender.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Liverpool are already in discussions with Araujo and his representatives, and that there may have been meetings between both parties.

Wyness added that Slot’s side are struggling in defensive areas, and need to address their problem in the January transfer window.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Liverpool in particular, there’s been some red lights flashing in the Liverpool defence, and I think Araujo could be one that’s on their shortlist.
“Unless the Marc Guehi thing ends up happening, I think Araujo is one that could be coming. He’s a quality player. I think he would suit Liverpool in particular, and I think they’re prepared to reach out and get him.
“Liverpool would be favourites in that race from what I’m hearing and I believe that there’s been visits and discussions already. So let’s just wait and see how that transpires.
“The January deals will be being lined up right now and particularly in the international break there’ll be a lot of talk and players trying to have a word with other players privately while they’re on international duty.
“That’s where I think these sort of things do get some traction as we go on over these next couple of weeks.”
Liverpool working to secure another defender deal
Meanwhile, Liverpool are still desperate to tie Ibrahima Konate down to a new deal, despite the defender’s poor start to the season.

The France international remains a crucial part of Slot’s plans, particularly given their lack of depth at the back.
Liverpool fans urged the club to sell Konate in the wake of their defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League.
However, the club are confident that the centre-back will battle through this period of poor form, and come out the other side as a better player.
