Campaigners have criticised Kemi Badenoch for claiming the Conservatives were “brave enough to take Britain out of the European Union”.

During her speech at the Conservative Party conference, Badenoch said: “And of course, we were brave enough to take Britain out of the European Union, honouring the biggest democratic mandate in our history.”

It comes as the party suffer record low poll ratings, and after YouGov polling for Best for Britain found the Conservative Party’s flagship policy – Brexit – has been a failure according to people intending to vote for them at the next election.

Cal Roscow, campaigns director at Best for Britain, said:

“Kemi Badenoch says the Conservative Party were “brave enough” to take Britain out of the EU. That ‘bravery’ has been rewarded with their lowest ever poll ratings.

“Our polling shows the public firmly believe Brexit has been a failure for the UK, including more than twice as many Tory supporters than those who think it was a success. Badenoch should be honest about the damage leaving the EU has done, and begin the hard work of repair.”
