Actors, crews and industry staff will touch down in the district next Thursday, with Saltaire the selected location for upcoming feature film “Ink”.

Ink, based on the award-winning play of the same name, is set in the 1960s and charts the rise of media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s empire, according to a letter sent to some residents in the Victorian model village.

StudioCanal, one of the companies behind the new film, announced in August that Academy Award and Oscar nominee Guy Pearce, who has starred in Memento, The King’s Speech and The Hurt Locker, is in talks to play Murdoch.

Jack O’Connell, who made his name in Brit-teen drama Skins but has since acted opposite George Clooney and Julia Roberts in 2016’s Money Monster, as well as being hand-picked by Angelina Jolie to lead the cast of her 2014 flick Unbroken, is in negotiations to star as Larry Lamb, who Murdoch hired to run The Sun in the late 1960s.

British film legend Danny Boyle is set to direct the movie.

The letter to residents and businesses – headed with logos for three companies, StudioCanal, House Productions and newly-formed Ink Production UK – revealed filming will take place in Victoria Road.

It said: “We have a couple of scenes which we would like to film on Victoria Road on Thurs 16th October and one of these scenes involves an old classic car driving the length of the street followed by a camera mounted on a drone.

“As the film is set in the 1960s, we would ideally like to clear the street of modern cars and put some of our own old classic cars in their place.

“In order to film safely and with the level of control needed, Bradford Council have given permission for a managed road closure on October 16 in Victoria Road and also for the suspension of parking bays.”

Filming is expected to take about three hours.

Murdoch is known as one of the most influential people in the media industry – founding the global News Corporation, running several newspapers in the UK such as The Sun and News of the World, launching Sky and establishing America’s fourth major television network, Fox.

The 94-year-old stepped down as chairman of Fox and News Corp last year.

StudioCanal seemingly being involved in the movie gives some indication as to its prestige, given it is one of Europe’s largest film and TV studios.

Some of the films StudioCanal or its associated companies produced are, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Stargate, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Johnny English and Paddington.

A diversion will be put in place to allow traffic to come and go from Saltaire Railway Station, the NHS building and the Riverside Court apartment block at the north end of Victoria Road.

Closure points will be staffed by traffic management operatives to allow access when needed, for example, to the college car parks and cul-de-sacs off Victoria Road.

There may be times when the team also need to hold traffic on Caroline Street and the north end of Victoria Road for brief periods.

Saltaire has been selected for the scenes by experienced film location manager, David Seaton, who lists blockbuster films like Spiderman: Far From Home, Inception and Guardians of the Galaxy among his credits.

Seaton was also involved in 28 Years Later: Bone Temple, a further follow-up to cult-classic 28 Days Later starring a young Cillian Murphy, which was partly filmed in Bradford.

A number of trucks and film crews arrived at the former Richard Dunn Sports Centre at the start of last September after residents living in nearby Sunny Bank Road received a letter headed “28 Years Later Ltd”.

Later in the month, a selection of old rusty cars and an ice cream van were spotted at the iconic Bradford landmark.

Part of the sports centre’s car park appears in the trailer 28 Years Later: Bone Temple, which will be released on January 1, 2026.

The letter, signed off by Seaton, said: “We look forward to filming in Saltaire and putting it on the big screen and we hope it will be an interesting experience for local residents and business owners.”

The Telegraph & Argus contacted Bradford Council and Saltaire Village Society for comment but neither responded.
