NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 9 – Safaricom has more than doubled its 5G network coverage to 1,700 sites in the financial year 2025, up from 803 in the previous year, representing a 111.7 percent increase.
According to the company’s 2025 Sustainable Business Report, the rapid expansion underscores Safaricom’s strategic focus on next-generation connectivity and the future-proofing of its network.
“Additionally, there was a major surge in 5G-enabled sites, which more than doubled to 1,700, reflecting the company’s strategic focus on next-generation connectivity,” the report stated.
The telco attributed the growth to rising demand for 5G services among homes and enterprises, driven by the need for ultra-fast internet speeds for streaming, downloads, and business applications.
During the same period, Safaricom’s 4G coverage rose from 6,745 to 6,937 sites, while 3G sites increased from 6,823 to 6,970.
“In FY25, Safaricom achieved near-universal coverage across its legacy networks, with over 97 percent of the population covered by 2G, 3G, and 4G services,” the report noted.
The company added that its 5G rollout now covers 30 percent of Kenya’s population through the activation of 900 new 5G sites, laying the groundwork for faster, more reliable connectivity and future-ready digital services.
