The German government has decided to procure SPY-6(V)1 radar systems from Raytheon, an RTX business, for installation on its upcoming F127 frigates.

This decision marks Germany as the inaugural international customer for the advanced radar technology, contingent upon a foreign military sales contract with the US Navy.

The proposed agreement encompasses a full suite of support and services necessary for integrating the technology with the frigate’s design.

Raytheon’s SPY-6(V)1 is distinguished by its four-array faces, each outfitted with 37 radar modular assemblies, which collectively deliver uninterrupted 360-degree situational awareness.

The SPY-6 family of radars is central to the US Navy’s air and missile defence strategy, serving across seven classes of ships.

It represents a significant enhancement in capability for naval fleets.

Raytheon naval power president Barbara Borgonovi said: “Germany’s selection of SPY-6 reaffirms the global confidence in the radar’s advanced capabilities and its critical role in enhancing naval defence.

“Integrating the radar on F127 frigates will provide the German Navy with a multi-mission solution that enables faster and more informed decision-making at sea.”

Raytheon manufactures various radar programmes, including SPY-6, at its Radar Development Facility in Andover, Massachusetts.

This 30,000ft² facility has advanced vertical integration and automation capabilities, operating continuously to produce and test radars for both US forces and their allies.

The German Navy’s F127 frigates are set to be constructed by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and NVL Group.

These ships will be based on the MEKO A-400 AMD concept, specifically tailored by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to meet the German Navy’s air defence requirements.

The first F127 frigate is anticipated to be mission-ready by 2034.
