There’s good news for Sky subscribers this week, as the telly firm has confirmed that it’s dishing out a major bonus to customers – and it won’t cos a penny. The company has announced a limited-time “channel boost,” unlocking a wide range of extra channels for free.
The blockbuster upgrade is available from today (October 10) and will run for seven full days, ending on October 16. That means viewers can enjoy a full week of premium content without paying an extra fee. So, how can you get this free upgrade and what is included?
Sky says the free upgrade is automatically available to anyone with a basic Sky Essential TV package. If you’re one of those customers, your plan has now been upgraded to the more premium Sky Ultimate TV option at no additional cost.
That upgrade brings access to a host of extra channels that would normally be locked behind a paywall. This includes popular networks such as Sky Max, Sky Crime, Sky Documentaries, U&Gold and Comedy Central.
In a statement, from Sky sent directly to the Express, the company confirmed: “From 10–16 October, Sky Essential TV customers can access Sky Ultimate TV at no extra cost.”
Sky added that the change means access to dozens of new viewing options: “This will unlock 35+ extra channels to watch, including Sky Max, featuring unmissable shows from the final series of Brassic to BAFTA-winning Mr Bigstuff, as well as other favourites like Sky Crime, Sky Documentaries, U&Gold, and Comedy Central.”

There is plenty of new show to explore too, as the TV giant continued: “Other shows to enjoy include new mockumentary The Paper on Sky Max, The Office on Sky Comedy, as well as FBI and Fire Country on Sky Witness.”
The best part? Sky says customers don’t have to lift a finger to access the freebie. The company confirmed that the upgrade is automatic, meaning all Sky Essential TV customers will see the extra channels appear on their service from today.
Of course, this week-long trial is the companies way for customers to see what the upgrade is like, hoping that once the free period ends, viewers will be tempted to make the upgrade for real.
Sky has also revealed that existing customers can upgrade to Sky Ultimate TV for its lowest ever upgrade price of just £3 extra a month.

And Sky isn’t the only provider handing out freebies this October. Virgin Media has announced its own offer, giving customers access to channels including Sky Kids, Cartoon Network and Baby TV throughout the month.
That means families can tune into hits like Pip and Posy’s Spooktacular Party (Sky Kids), The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball (Cartoon Network), SpongeBob SquarePants (Nickelodeon) and Peppa Pig – all without paying any additional fees.
Virgin says it has launched the freebie in time for the October half-term
