London City Council and mayor clash over ethics board appointments

  • 11 October 2025

LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) — The London City Council meeting Friday was marked by another contentious disagreement between council members and Mayor Randall Weddle, this time over appointments to the city’s ethics board.

The dispute represents the latest chapter in ongoing tensions that have plagued city government since the impeachment process against Weddle began. Although Weddle was impeached, a judge later reinstated him to office.

What appeared to be a routine agenda item — ethics board appointments alongside property tax discussions — quickly became controversial when the council rejected Weddle’s proposal to allow the Cumberland Valley Area Development District to make the appointments.

“Why not, let’s solve it. Allow a non partisan group to have oversight of it,” Weddle said during the meeting.

Council members expressed skepticism about the mayor’s suggestion, with some questioning the legality of the proposed approach.

“Until we have confirmation I don’t think we should do anything,” said Councilman Judd Weaver.

The council indicated they want their attorney to review the matter before taking any action on the ethics board appointments.

“I would like more information before we do anything,” said councilman Anthony Ortega.

After the meeting, Weddle said the council failed to follow recommendations made by Judge David Williams during the impeachment proceedings.

“He brought that up. ‘You’re trying to appoint people to boards. I asked you not to do that, let me get through this,’” Weddle said.

The meeting drew numerous spectators curious about the ongoing drama in city government. Weddle acknowledged the community’s frustration with the continued discord.

“That’s the problem, this community needs us to move on,” the mayor said.

No action was taken on the ethics board appointment issue. The next city council meeting is scheduled for November 3.
