A historic hidden gem has been crowned the Gold Winner for Scotland at the Sykes Cottages Travel Awards 2025, and it’s well worth the journey. The accolade recognises the country’s most exceptional holiday properties, celebrating sought-after bolt holes that combine traditional heritage with exceptional comfort, tucked away in unforgettable locations.
Behind the doors of Balcary Tower is a peaceful coastal escape on the Solway Firth. The C-listed, four-storey tower blends 19th-century heritage with modern comfort in one of Dumfries and Galloway’s most picturesque settings, just over 2.5 hours away from Newcastle by car.
Built around 1860 by Colonel Johnstone, Laird of Auchencairn House, the tower is said to have been constructed for his French mistress, who also served as the family’s governess. Today, it stands as a serene retreat offering 19 acres of private land, direct beach access, and panoramic views over Hestan Island, which was once a hotspot for smugglers and Cistercian monks.
The property combines bold Scottish architecture with contemporary touches, including wood-burning stoves, an incredible bathroom with views out across the water and a balcony terrace perfect for taking in the sea air. Located at the end of a private drive, the tower is designed for both comfort and seclusion.
With four bedrooms and four bathrooms, the Tower can comfortably sleep eight visitors. Guests can enjoy alfresco dining on the terrace, relax by the fire pit under starry skies, or venture out to explore the surrounding coastline and charming nearby villages.

“It is very private, peaceful and very comfortable. The decor and facilities were to a high standard and luxury, and the beds were very comfortable. We had an enjoyable stay and would definitely recommend this property. I will be back.”
The second reviewer was also happy but did state mugs were needed in the kitchen, writing: “Fantastic location – just needs some mugs in the kitchen.” The property owner has since replied, thanking the reviewer for the feedback and saying they will get the mug situation ‘remedied’.
