Directed by James Brining (the Lyceum’s artistic director) and reimagined by Mike Poulton, this rendition of Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece is highly entertaining as well as engaging.
The slightly lighter touch brings an enhanced enjoyment of the complex relationships between the multiple characters. This is enriched by set designers Colin Richmond and Anna Kelsey whose imaginative use of the stage evoke just the right atmosphere.
Each of the actors have an authoritative aura making them highly believable, a truly wonderful cast. But I must point out that for me, the true star of the show was the young Harmony Rose-Bremner playing Nina.
From the off when she interpreted the words of Konstantin (Lorn Macdonald) in the play-within-the-play, she was dazzling. She continued to bring extraordinary emotion to the arena as the forlorn and frustrated lover and actress.
Overall, very moving and highly recommended.
