France had a tougher time coming out of the group play. The nation started in Group E, finishing with a 2-1-0 record and a total of seven points on the table. Though it had more points than even Norway, France finished as the No. 3 team in the group, as the United States and South Africa both had six points as well with better goal differentials, which made them No. 1 and 2.
France didn’t let that get to it though, heading to face Japan, the 3-0-0 undefeated winner of Group A, in the Round of 16. Similar to Norway’s Round of 16 matchup, France went all 90 minutes scoreless, forcing the game to go to extra time. In the stoppage time of the 120th minute, France netted a goal from Lucas Michal that jolted France to the quarterfinals.
