South Gloucestershire Council is continuing to work to improve “active travel” in the area

A key road connecting to an A-road is to be hit with months of roadworks. Restrictions and closures will be in place for four months for works to take place on a road linking Thornbury with the A38.
From October 20, Alveston Hill will be closed in a northbound direction from 6am until 8pm, seven days a week.
During these hours, traffic will still be able to travel from Thornbury towards the A38, and on towards Bristol and the M5. However, there will be no inbound access from the Down Road junction from the A38 direction to Thornbury for motor vehicles. Some access will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists, although cyclists will need to dismount.
From 8pm until 6am on every night except Sundays, the road will completely close in both directions. There will be no access for any road users, including pedestrians, and residents trying to get to properties in the affected area may be delayed.
The closures are scheduled to be in place until February 27, 2026. Work will only take place overnight as there will not be enough room to work and allow the traffic flow during the day, according to the council.
During the closures, diversions will be in place via the A38 between the Grovesend Road junction and Alveston Hill junction. The T1 bus service will also be disrupted.
There will be some noise and vibration overnight while work takes place. South Gloucestershire Council said their teams would minimise the disruption to residents as much as possible.
“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we carry out these essential improvements,” a council spokesperson said.
The roadworks are part of the “active travel improvements” SGC has been implementing on the A38, Bradley Stoke Way and Alveston Hill throughout this year. The aim of the project is to improve public transport and cycling on SGC’s road network.
When it is finished, the Alveston Hill Cycleway will provide a direct, segregated cycle link between Thornbury and Alveston, as well as linking to proposed improvements on the A38 corridor to provide a sustainable connection to the north fringe of Bristol, the council said.
The Alveston Hill junction will reopen on October 20 to coincide with the start of the new set of works, but traffic will only be permitted to reach as far as the Down Road junction. The Down Road junction will remain open throughout the works, to allow traffic to travel along Down Road in both directions.
