Two men have been charged with murder after the death of former Lostprophets front-man Ian Watkins.

Watkins, 48, was pronounced dead on Saturday morning after being attacked while serving his sentence at HMP Wakefield – which is known as Monster Mansion. Now, West Yorkshire Police say two people have been charged with his murder.

Rashid Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43, both of HMP Wakefield, have been charged with murder. Gedel was jailed in 2023 for the murder of Sven Badzak, and Dodsworth was jailed after raping a woman five times in 2018.

They are both due to appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Watkins was jailed in 2013 after admitting to 13 child sex crimes, and admitted to the rape and sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. He also pleaded guilty to conspiring to rape a child, three charges of sexual assault involving minors, seven relating to taking, creating or possessing indecent images of children and one of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving a sex act on an animal.

West Yorkshire Police said: “Detectives have charged two men with murder after the death of a prisoner at HMP Wakefield on Saturday.

“Ian Watkins aged 48 was pronounced dead after being seriously assaulted at HMP Wakefield on Saturday morning(11 October).

“Rashid Gedel aged 25 who self defines as any other black background and Samuel Dodsworth aged 43 who self defines as white British both of HMP Wakefield have both been charged with murder.

“They are due to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court this morning.”
